We are CoCreate Age at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland. We’re working with older people, whānau, communities, and partners to co‑create equitable, world‑leading ageing research in Aotearoa New Zealand.

CoCreate Age exists to improve the health, wellbeing, and human flourishing of older people in Aotearoa New Zealand through research designed with older people, not for them.

Our purpose is to build a world‑leading, transdisciplinary centre that delivers creative, innovative, and equitable solutions to the needs and opportunities older people identify.

Our Approach

Co‑created research is designed and carried out with the people it is meant to benefit. It involves those people at every stage: deciding what questions matter, shaping methods, and helping with the research itself. The goal is to make outcomes relevant, practical, and equitable because they are grounded in real‑world experience.

Co‑created research works because it draws on lived experience and surfaces ideas and challenges that researchers otherwise might miss.

Focus Areas

Health and Wellbeing

We want to ensure healthy ageing and promote wellbeing in later life. We look at how health and social care services in community and residential care can be improved to provide a better quality of life for older people, their whānau, family, and caregivers.

Place and Community

We’re helping create age-friendly and dementia supportive places which are inclusive and safe. We research solutions that explore the fit between older people’s needs and their living environments. We prioritise community research methodologies, Māori and Pasifika partnerships, and storytelling that returns findings to communities.

Work, Income and Retirement

We advocate for age-friendly workplaces and develop opportunities for older people to contribute their knowledge and experience in the workplace and through retirement.
